The quality of the cashmere fleece is determined by three factors: its length, its diameter, and the degree of crimping. Any goat can grow cashmere, but those we call “cashmere goats” have been selectively bred to produce it in significant amounts.
Silk worms, domesticated for generations, are incapable of surviving in the wild. To produce a kilo of silk, 6000 silk worms are needed which will consume 200 kilos of mulberry tree leaves. They produce a filament that can measure up to 2 kms long but on average is about 1 km in length. 5 to 8 filaments are wound together to obtain a thread. Today most silk production takes place in Asia.
